Event Details

In this session, you will hear firsthand from speakers who have completed international placements, research projects, and electives across the globe as they share their experiences, lessons learned, and insights into how global health issues are being addressed in different settings. Register by December 1, 2024.

Objectives of This Session:

  • To showcase real-world experiences in global health through the lens of learners.
  • To explore how health disparities and global health challenges are addressed in diverse regions of the world.
  • To foster knowledge exchange and discussion on the future of global health practices and research.

NOTE: Students enrolled in the Concentration in Global Health and Social Accountability will gain 2 points for attending upon submitting on Brightspace.

About Global Health Learning Network:

The Global Health Learning Network is a platform for knowledge growth and exchange with the goal to build a community of practice in global health that reaches across researchers, practitioners, and learners from all global health domains to include members of the public with an interest in global health.

The School of Epidemiology and Public Health, Bruyère Health, WHO Collaborating Centre for Knowledge Translation and Health Technology Assessment in Health Equity, and the International and Global Health Office (IGHO) are collaborating to host the global health learning network events.

About the Presentations and Speakers: 

Lina Rahouma

Third-year medical student at the University of Ottawa

Lina is a 3rd year medical student in the French stream at the University of Ottawa, She completed her Bachelor of applied science in Nutrition and Food science in 2020 in Toronto. Since arriving at uOttawa, she has been enrolled in the Concentration of Global health and Social accountability and has actively been engaged in many global health initiatives and experiences. She was the VP global health for the aesculpian society, she did 2 international placements in Egypt and one international research project.

Akino Milligan

Akino Milligan

MPH+ student at the University of Ottawa

Akino is a second year MPH+ student at the University of Ottawa, in the Global Health stream with French language training. She completed her BSc at the University of Guelph in 2022, where she became interested in global health through a research assistantship focused on international health politics. While at uOttawa, she has expanded on this interest not only through coursework, but a practicum that took her to Tanzania to research climate change and malaria. She is passionate about global health governance, climate change adaptation, and health equity, and hopes to work in these spaces after graduating this spring.

Charles Thickstun

PhD Candidate in Epidemiology at the University of Ottawa

Charles is a PhD candidate in epidemiology at the University of Ottawa and holds a MSc in epidemiology also from the University of Ottawa. He will share his research on the geospatial factors associated with malaria vector control trials and their implications for future trial designs.

Julien Turk

Julien Turk

Third-year medical student at the University of Ottawa

Julien is a third-year medical student at the University of Ottawa in the French stream and is also enrolled in the Concentration in Global Health and Social Accountability. He completed his BSc at McGill University in 2022. Since arriving at uOttawa, he has been an active member of the concentration serving as a student ambassador, participating in various workshops and summer courses, and completing clinical electives in rural Ontario, Yukon, Tanzania, and Oman. In the future, he hopes to train as an emergency medicine physician and contribute to GH projects in northern Canada and abroad.

Kiara Britto

Third-year medical student at the University of Ottawa

Kiara is a third-year medical student at the University of Ottawa, studying in the French stream and registered in the Concentration in Global Health and Social Accountability. She completed an Honours BSc in Biomedical Science at the University of Ottawa in 2022. Having grown up across four countries—England, Belgium, Panama, and Italy—Kiara has long aspired to blend her passion for travel with her dedication to medicine. Recently, she completed a four-week international elective in surgery in Brazil, which deepened her commitment to addressing health disparities, both locally and globally. She hopes to specialize in pediatric medicine and practice both in Canada and internationally.
