This award is presented annually to a member of the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) teaching staff who has demonstrated outstanding performance in their teaching in the pre-clerkship program (1st and 2nd years), particularly in the development of innovative teaching material and methods, courses, and programs of study, and for their interpersonal skills.

Selection criteria

The selection will be based on evidence of outstanding teaching at the pre-clerkship level. Contributions to all aspects of teaching will be considered. The following are examples and are not intended to be exhaustive:

• Course and/or lab design and curriculum development;
• Development of innovative content and incentives that engage students in learning processes;
• Development of new techniques for student evaluation and testing; and
• Variety in their offer of courses.

This award is presented annually to a member of the teaching staff who has demonstrated outstanding performance in their teaching at the clerkship level of the UGME program, particularly in the development of innovative teaching material and methods, courses, and programs of study, and for their interpersonal skills.

The selection will be based on evidence of outstanding teaching at the residency and fellowship levels at the Faculty of Medicine. Contributions to all aspects of teaching will be considered. The following are examples and are not intended to be exhaustive:

• Development of innovative and engaging methods for teaching;
• Development of new techniques for student evaluation and testing;
• Engagement and interest in teaching residents and fellows to teach; and
• Ability to mentor, motivate and engage learners. 

This award is presented annually to a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding performance in their teaching at the Continuing Professional Development level (whether Continuing Medical Education, Faculty Development, or both), particularly in the development of innovative teaching material and methods, courses, and programs of study, and for their interpersonal skills.

Selection criteria

The selection will be based on evidence of outstanding teaching at the Continuing Professional Development level at the Faculty of Medicine. Contributions to all aspects of teaching will be considered. The following are examples and are not intended to be exhaustive:

• Development of courses and/curriculums that engage learners;
• Development of new techniques for learner evaluation and testing;
• Innovation and creativity;
• Administrative contributions to CPD, CME, and/or Faculty Development; and
• Number and variety of courses offered. 

This award is presented annually to a member of the teaching staff who has demonstrated outstanding performance in their teaching at community sites.

Part-time and full-time professors at any rank (lecturer and adjunct, assistant, associate, full and emeritus professor), who participate in the teaching and training of learners at any of the Faculty’s affiliated institutions (see Affiliated institutions section on this page) may be nominated.

Selection criteria

The selection will be based on evidence of outstanding teaching of learners at any of the Faculty’s affiliated institutions (see Affiliated institutions section on this page). The following are examples of contributions and are not intended to be exhaustive:

• Teaching ability;
• Enthusiasm and ability to motivate and empower learners;
• Impact on learners and trainees;
• Quantity of teaching and number of trainees/learners overseen;
• Contributions to the planning and administration of community teaching. 

This award is presented annually to a member of the teaching staff who has demonstrated outstanding performance in their teaching in the TMM program, particularly in the development of innovative teaching material, methods, and courses, and for his or her interpersonal skills.

• Course and/or lab design and curriculum development;

This award is presented annually to a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding mentorship towards Faculty of Medicine learners and/or faculty members at any stage of their career, and helps to inspire and motivate them. Mentors act as role models and have the potential to shape the learning process and experience. They may be in a formal or informal mentorship role.

Selection criteria

Examples of the behaviours of outstanding mentors include:

• Supporting learners and faculty in the development of relevant skills and ensure they appreciate the relevance and value of these skills;
• Providing emotional and practical support, offering mentees time for reflection and for practicing skills;
• Demonstrating interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to give comprehensive feedback and the opportunity for mentees to learn from mistakes and develop;
• Demonstrating innovative teaching skills and the ability to tailor the learning process to meet the needs of their mentees;
• Promoting and facilitating the development of the core values of professionalism; and
• Exuding a positive attitude that inspires and enthuses students and faculty.
