The Bruyère Health Academic Family Medicine unit has staff and faculty dedicated to providing excellent comprehensive care, education and socially-responsive research.

About Us

We work closely with organizations that help under-serviced populations, such as St. Mary’s Home for young families, May Court Hospice, The Ottawa Mission and refugee organizations. We also offer:

  • Bilingual primary care services;
  • On site X-ray, pharmacy and lab;
  • Two clinical teams, each with nurses, nurse practitioners, and physicians, both attending and resident;
  • Primary care services in collaboration with a group of allied health professionals, including: social workers, pharmacist, dietitian, kinesiologist, mental health team and diabetes educators, smoking cessation counsellor, palliative care nurse, some specialty consultants on site;
  • Novel teaching methods to enshrine the humanities in medicine; and,

We are the sister site to the Primrose Family Medicine Centre, so all allied health workers, after hours clinics, master schedule, FMOB teaching, and call schedules are shared between our sites.

Teaching and Learning Opportunities

Our family medicine residents provide community-based primary care in a supervised environment. You will offer care to a defined group of patients at the Bruyère Health Academic Family Medicine Centre.

You will have a primary preceptor for your two year training period. Your preceptor will discuss and review your educational objectives, ensure that your direct observation requirements are met, and provide evaluations for family medicine rotations.

In addition to your core blocks of family medicine in a primary community practice, you may also work with family physicians in several other settings including rural practice and the family medicine hospital service at The Ottawa Hospital’s General Campus.

Patient Population

The Bruyère Health Academic Family Medicine Centre serves a diverse, multilingual and multi-ethnic patient population. Our unit distinguishes itself in its unique humanitarian approach and exposure to under-serviced populations. You will encounter a wide variety of clinical problems with enhanced clinics in women’s health, obstetrics, pre and post natal care, sports medicine, well baby care and minor surgery.
