The Riverside Family Health Team, part of the award-winning Ottawa Hospital Family Health Team, includes physicians from diverse community practice backgrounds who are committed to responding to your specific learning needs.

About Us

As a team, we have expertise in suburban and inner city medicine, mental health care, immigrant care, HIV primary care, pediatrics, women's health, and obstetrics. Our physicians also demonstrate scholarship in administration, education and primary care research.

We offer a growing list of enrichment opportunities for our residents in their family medicine blocks, including:

  • Dermatology, hypertension, diabetes team, and weekly prenatal clinics;
  • Psychiatric shared care;
  • Family medicine lumps and bumps surgical clinic;
  • Palliative care outreach (PGY 2);
  • Home visits with a nurse practitioner;
  • Practice simulated office oral examinations;
  • Teaching with the University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre;
  • In unit medical student teaching.

We are the sister site to the Civic Family Health Team, so all allied health workers, after hours clinics, master schedule, FMOB teaching, and call schedules are shared between our sites.

Teaching & Learning Opportunities

Riverside Family Health Team residents are assigned to an individual physician supervisor who will remain your primary preceptor throughout your residency. You will take on a number of your preceptor’s patients as your own with the help of our EMR.

You will meet with the supervising physician for informal teaching rounds before clinic. Topics can be resident-led, case-based, ethical or recent clinical questions. Each week, you will also take part in more formal learning opportunities, with two mornings dedicated to group learning on topics such as behavioural medicine, obstetrical curriculum, palliative or end-of-life care, and other family medicine issues.

Patient Population

Our patient profile is balanced across all ages. We have rostered patients from our physicians’ previous community practices, referred patients from the day hospital’s dialysis centre, palliative patients and prenatal patients. We are always looking for ways to make your experiences as diverse as possible. This includes recent changes, such as our practice of scheduling joint injections with residents and an attending supervisor.
