Submit an Application
You must submit the following documents to the Faculty of Medicine Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Office by email at [email protected].
- Admission application form
- CV
- Copies of transcripts from all universities you have attended which include the grading scale and passing grade.
University of Ottawa - Previous or current Ottawa students do not need to submit a transcript of their studies at the University of Ottawa. Professional programs in rehabilitation require all transcripts, including those from uOttawa.
Additional clarification
We recommend that you contact your referees two to three weeks before you are ready to apply to confirm if they are willing to provide you with a letter of recommendation and to get their email address and current job title. The information about the individuals providing letters of recommendation is entered through your uoZone, the student portal.
- Once the referees’ names and contact information is added in your portal, an email which will include the procedure on how to fill out the electronic recommendation form will be sent from the University (it may take 1-3 business days). They will have 10 business days to complete the form.
For example, a referee could be a professor, a thesis director, an employer or any other person who can assess your aptitude to pursue Graduate Studies.
Let the individuals know that the University of Ottawa’s letter of recommendation process is done online and is entirely confidential. They will receive a link by email to the secure online system.
It is helpful to provide the individuals with a deadline in order to ensure they submit their letters of recommendation before the application deadline. Your application will not be considered complete (and thus not evaluated) until all your letters of recommendation are received.
Letters of recommendation must be in English or French.
We do not accept letters of recommendation from family members, friends, students, former or current classmates, employees or teaching assistants.
It’s best to provide academic or work email addresses for those providing letters of recommendation. Email address from Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc. are discouraged.
This process is completed within a secure portal where your personal information will remain protected and accessible only by authorized personnel, ensuring the confidentiality of your recommendation letters.
In your application, you must declare/submit an official academic transcript from each postsecondary establishment that you have attended, including regular programs (whether completed or not), exchanges, letters of permission, online or correspondence courses, courses taken as a special student or visiting students, etc.
To accelerate the admission process, an electronic copy of your transcripts (including the grading scale with passing mark) can be temporarily accepted until we receive your official copies. Please upload them in your uoZone portal in your uoDoc application.
- If admitted to the program, you will need to request the host institution to directly provide us with the official document. For this purpose, a transcript is considered official only if it is received either:
- by mail (regular mail is fine) in a sealed university envelope to: Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, Room 2016 - 451 Smyth rd, Ottawa, ON, K1H 8M5
- electronically from the host institution and must be sent directly to [email protected]
- in person: the official document must still be in the official sealed envelope All transcript information is confidential; envelopes must not be opened.
- If the transcript and degree certificate are not in English or French, a certified translation (signed and stamped/sealed) must be submitted.
- WES transcripts are not recognized by our office
- All transcripts will be verified for authenticity.
- Transcripts must show all courses, all marks, and the awarding of degree(s).
- University of Ottawa - Previous or current Ottawa students do not need to submit a transcript of their studies at the University of Ottawa. Professional programs in rehabilitation require all transcripts, including those from uOttawa.
- Students graduating from an Ontario university can order an official version of their transcript through OUAC for a fee.
All documents and transcripts submitted to the University of Ottawa become the property of the University and will not be returned.
(except MPH and MSc-EPI – Refer to the advice on how to optimize your application)
Applications for a master program
Your letter of intent (two or three pages) must address the following five areas:
Research project: Indicate the field you propose to research. Be as specific as possible about your research goals.
- Preparation: Indicate your educational background and ability to deal with this topic (courses and seminars you took as an undergraduate, or any relevant research or experience).
- If possible, name professors who could potentially supervise your thesis and say whether you have contacted them. If you’ve applied for the MSc in Epidemiology, you do not have to name potential thesis supervisors because you don’t need this information to be admitted to the program.
- Mention your relevant experience (participation in an exchange program, work as a research assistant, lab work, etc.), as well as your career goals.
- Explain anything that might seem unusual in your academic history (for example, poor grades one term due to illness, time away from university, etc.).
Applications for a PhD program
Your letter of intent (two or three pages) must address the following four areas:
Research project: Give a general outline of your research project, career goals and matters relevant to your chosen research field (definitions of topics, research hypotheses and sources).
- Preparation: Mention your abilities and background regarding your proposed topic (university education, personal research, well-known scientists you have worked with, etc.).
- Name professors who would be potential thesis supervisors and say whether you have contacted them.
- Mention whether you have applied for graduate scholarships from appropriate bodies, and whether you have received them.
Your resume should include all your publications, volunteer work and any scholarships you have received.
View Language Requirements, to find out the acceptable language tests and minimum score required
- If your first language is neither English nor French, you must provide the results of a certified language test such as the TOEFL or IELTS as proof of your ability in your program’s language of instruction (English or French). When evaluating your application, we will verify your transcripts to determine if the language proficiency test requirement can be waived and update your file according, if applicable.
- Other than the language test, the only documents accepted to satisfy the language requirements are:
- a letter received directly from the institution where your studies were completed that confirms that the language medium of your program is English or French.
- a transcript with the mention of the language medium : English or French.
- All applicants must have completed a minimum of two full-time years of university studies in English or French to be eligible to apply to our graduate programs.
- If you are applying for the MPH+ the language testing will be administered after admittance to the program so that language level can be established.
- If admitted to the program, you will be required to submit the official language test.
- Please ensure to request the ETS office where you took the language test to make your scores public.
We have gathered tips to help you with your supervisor search.
If you’re applying for the MASC in Anatomical Sciences Education or for the Master in public health (MPH) or the graduate diploma, a supervisor is not required.
The hardest part of the application process is finding a supervisor. We recommend finding a supervisor early since you must find a professor who has agreed to act as your thesis supervisor and who has supervisory privileges within your primary department of study (BMI = Biochemistry and Immunology, CMM/NSC = Cellular and Molecular Medicine, or EPI = Epidemiology) to complete the admission process.
If you are applying to a specialization, the professor must have supervisory privileges in both disciplines.
