"The Master of Biochemistry (MSc) prepares candidates for a variety of careers in teaching and research both within and outside of academia. We offer the space, expertise, tools and technologies to push the boundaries of knowledge and help you become your best future self."

Broaden your knowledge in biochemistry and prepare for a health care-related career

Dig deep into your love of biochemistry, cutting edge methodology and big data through the department’s research in structural and chemical biology; genetics, cell and developmental biology; metabolism and lipid biology; and systems and computational biology. Program graduates can move on to careers in industry, government, research, medicine or other health-related professions.

Gain immersive laboratory research experience

Our program is one of the only one-year master’s focused on research experience. Sharpen your critical thinking skills over an eight-month immersive in-laboratory research project with the Faculty or one of its partner research institutions. You’ll develop a research question, conduct experiments, and collect and analyze data using cutting-edge methodologies such as LC-MS/MS (for proteomics and lipidomics studies), genomics, structural biology, cell imaging and flow cytometry.

Join a network of research excellence

Regularly ranked in the top three for research intensity in Canada by Maclean’s magazine, the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine receives approximately $140 million in research funding annually and is home to 120 research chairs.

The Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology hosts the renowned Ottawa Institute of Systems Biology. Its professors have established relationships with leading organizations where you can gain experience, such as the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI), the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute (CHEORI), the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) and Health Canada.
