Explore how the human body responds to viruses and prepare for a career in medicine
Study virology, microbiology and the mechanisms that govern inflammation and the body’s immune response to pathogens. Program research focuses on three main areas: bacteriology, virology and immunology. Graduates move on to careers in government, industry, research, medicine or other health-related professions.
Gain immersive laboratory research experience
The Master of Science in Microbiology and Immunology is unique in its intense hands-on nature and one-year duration. It lets you hone your critical thinking skills during an eight-month immersive laboratory research experience with the Faculty or one of its partner research institutions. You’ll develop a research proposal, conduct experiments and collect and analyze data using cutting-edge methodologies such as cell imaging, flow cytometry and LC-MS/MS for proteomics and lipidomics studies.
Join a network of research excellence
Canada’s capital offers a dynamic environment where key research organizations, innovative technology companies and policy-makers work together. The University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine alone receives approximately $140 million in research funding annually and is home to 120 research chairs.
The Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology hosts the renowned Ottawa Institute of Systems Biology and the Centre for Infection, Immunity and Inflammation. Through relationships professors have established, you can gain invaluable experience with leading institutes such as the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI), the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute (CHEO-RI), the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) and Health Canada.
