Biography
Dr. Avik Nath was appointed Vice-Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) in January 2025, joining the Executive Leadership Team of the Faculty.
Dr. Nath brings solid leadership expertise to the role, combined with a deep connection to the Faculty. He completed his MD and residency training at uOttawa before joining the Departments of Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine, currently holding the appointment of Associate Professor at the latter. He earned an MSc of Public Health–Health Services Management from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and he recently completed the Schulich Mini-MBA: Physician Business Leadership Program. Dr. Nath is also a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (FCFP).
Known for his collaborative approach, Dr. Nath works to build consensus and drive meaningful change. His career has focused on enhancing medical education in Canada, particularly in competency-based training and transition-to-practice curricula. He has conducted peer-reviewed scholarly work in these areas and is committed to supporting a dynamic research environment by fostering collaboration, encouraging open communication, and the sharing of resources and expertise. He is dedicated to promoting a culture of continuous learning and providing access to relevant training and development opportunities to help team members advance in their respective fields.
Dr. Nath has served as the Program Director for the University’s enhanced skills program in emergency medicine for 14 years and is a representative on the Royal College Specialty Committee in Emergency Medicine. He currently serves as Chair of the National Residency Emergency Directors group, advocating for residents and programs at a national level.
Dr. Nath’s commitment to education has been recognized through multiple nominations for teaching and mentorship awards at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He contributes as an expert member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Accreditation Standards Improvement Committee and has served as an external surveyor on numerous accreditation visits to Canadian medical training programs. He has presented at numerous conferences and workshops over his 18-year career.
