A 4-week internship is offered to 4th-year students and residents of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa!

Since 2003, the Francophone Affairs office has been organizing Global Health internships in Benin for 4th-year medical students and residents. This internship allows you to choose your areas of interest and be supervised by Beninese and Canadian physicians, working collaboratively with students and residents from Benin.

Eligibility Criteria:

4th-year medical students and residents from all specialties, capable of working in French, are eligible.

Please Note:

This internship is equivalent to an elective for 4th-year students and a rural placement for family medicine/other residents. Individuals with respiratory issues should be aware that Cotonou is a highly polluted city. Proficiency in French is essential for this internship. Limited spots are available.

Date:

From February 8th to March 8th, 2025 (4 weeks).

Elective fees:

$1500 for students, $2000 for residents.

Selection Process:

Applications must be submitted by June 6th, 2024, midnight, including:

  • A CV
  • A motivation letter in French, detailing your previous Global Health activities, interests, expectations from the internship, what you believe it will offer you, and your qualities to integrate into a low-income and group living environment, to [email protected].

Interviews will take place from June 12th to 13th, with decisions announced the week of June 17th, 2024.

Prerequisite Courses:

All selected candidates must attend preparatory courses for the internship in summer and fall 2024.

Internship Sites:

Internships are available in urban and rural settings, offering a wide range of choices for participants. You can select from several sites based on your interests, including clinics and hospitals in Cotonou, as well as opportunities in specialties such as gastroenterology, cardiology, pediatrics, hematology, obstetrics, psychiatry, general surgery, urology, orthopedics, and emergency medicine. Additionally, perinatal internships are offered at the Maternité Lagune in Cotonou. There is also the possibility of participating in consultations and educational sessions in a rural village in Kolli (to be determined).
