The Faculty of Medicine’s GEM facility is launching a monthly mycoplasma testing subscription service to reduce the time burden imposed on individual researchers by screening.
Mycoplasma infections in cell cultures can go undetected for long periods, altering cell physiology and rendering data irreproducible and unpublishable. Infections can be spread from one contaminated culture to others in the lab. Most researchers therefore understand the benefits of routinely screening cell cultures for the presence of mycoplasma, so that action can be taken to eliminate infections as soon as they are detected.
