I am delighted to announce that, at its meeting on September 18, 2018, the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors approved the appointment of Dr. Bernard Jasmin as Dean of the Faculty of Medicine for a five-year term, from October 1, 2018 to June 30, 2023.
Dr. Bernard Jasmin (PhD, Université de Montréal) is the current interim Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa. He has held a number of positions at the University, including the position of Chair of the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine from 2002 to 2009, and Vice-Dean, Research from 2010 to 2017. Dr. Jasmin was promoted to the rank of full professor in 2000. Among his numerous accomplishments, he cofounded the University of Ottawa Centre for Neuromuscular Disease in 1999 and served as co-director of the Centre until 2002. He has also played a key role in the establishment of several broad-based strategic initiatives including the Brain and Mind Research Institute, the Centre for Infection, Immunity and Inflammation, and the design and implementation of a joint recruitment plan for Professors/Scientists with Clinical Departments and affiliated Research Institutes. In 2018, he was an invited professor at Université Paris Descartes, and served as Vice-President, Research of the Association of the Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) in 2017. In 2010, he was awarded the mentoring award by the Faculty of Medicine.
Dr. Jasmin’s research interests include, among others, the fundamental questions that are relevant for our understanding of the physiopathology of various neuromuscular diseases and for developing novel therapeutics for these diseases. Throughout his career, Dr. Jasmin has published more than 130 scientific articles and book chapters and has received a number of awards and scholarships, including the Premier’s Research Excellence Award, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIRH) New Investigator Award, the CIHR Investigator Award and the CIHR/Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis (IMHA) Quality of Life Award.
I am certain that his track record of achievement will make him well suited to lead the Faculty of Medicine.
