BTO Update: Thinking twice about hitting “print” has saved the faculty thousands of dollars

A faculty-wide campaign has helped reduce printing costs considerably since this past September.

Last year, to support budget-saving efforts at the Faculty, a XEROX photocopy and printing reduction campaign was implemented.

The cost of printing adds up quickly when you consider that colour printing and photocopying is $0.25 per copy and black and white is $0.05 per copy. The overall cost of printing, photocopying, paper and toner cartridges to the Faculty in 2016-2017 was approximately $209,000.

These costs were not sustainable and a plan was developed to inform staff about the necessity to reduce these types of expenses.

Faculty announcements, a survey and group discussions were used over the summer months to request that staff question why printing is necessary. New controls were then embedded in XEROX devices to enforce black and white and duplex printing as a default setting.

Since last September, we’ve had tremendous success on this initiative; photocopy and printing costs were reduced an average of 65% over three months.

Congratulations to all who made an effort to reduce their printing habits; please continue to try to do so in 2018!
