Each year, Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) students apply for residency positions matching their abilities and career aspirations. After years of contemplating their choices, completing their MD program objectives, succeeding at multiple examinations, and participating in many hours of electives, they are ready for their next challenge – medical residency.
It all begins with the match process, which has UGME students travelling across Canada to interview with residency selection committees within residency programs. Students then rank their choices in an online tool managed by the Canadian Residency Matching Service (CaRMS).
During this process, selection committees review students’ application files and interview results to determine their rank order list (ROL). The Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) office then reviews each file to ensure compliance with all requirements and approves ROLs. CaRMS then completes the match process and releases results.
Match day was on March 1, 2018 and the results are:
- 170 uOttawa medical students were involved in the match.
- 56 uOttawa UGME students matched to uOttawa Faculty of Medicine’s PGME programs.
- uOttawa’s UGME students achieved a match rate of 95% in the first round.
uOttawa’s PGME program is very excited to welcome all residents into its programs at the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine on July 1. The 2018 residency experience will begin with an orientation session scheduled to take place on June 29 at Roger Guindon Hall. We wish all medical students the very best in residency!
