Dr. Bernard Jasmin, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, has been awarded a Doctorat Honoris Causa, one of the highest distinctions that can be bestowed by an institution of higher learning in France.
Dr. Jasmin received his honorary doctorate on November 29 from l’Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, part of the University of Lyon and a prominent health research and teaching institution in France.
The award recognizes Dr. Jasmin’s international reputation as a researcher and his career-long dedication to planning and coordinating new initiatives and infrastructure for research and teaching that include co-founding the Centre for Neuromuscular Disease (now the Éric Poulin Centre for Neuromuscular Disease), one of the largest and most recognized research centres worldwide focused on developing novel therapies for the neuromuscular system.
Dr. Jasmin has spearheaded numerous international partnerships in neuromuscular and neuroscience research and beyond, including the creation of joint funding programs with l’Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, Paris-Descartes University, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
Professor Laurent Schaeffer, director of Institut NeuroMyoGène at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, spoke highly of Dr. Jasmin’s accomplishments.
“He has greatly contributed to the marked increase in research intensity at the Faculty of Medicine, while playing a key role in the establishment of several broad-based strategic initiatives, including the Brain and Mind Research Institute and the Centre for Infection, Immunity and Inflammation,” professor Schaeffer wrote.
While assuming various duties of leadership and administration, Dr. Jasmin has maintained a vigorous and internationally recognized research program aimed at deciphering the physiopathology of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Steinert myotonic dystrophy for developing novel therapeutics for these and other neuromuscular diseases.
