The Faculty of Medicine’s Dr. Darlene Kitty has been recognized for her academic leadership in diversity with an award from the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC). The award is one of several celebrating excellence in medical education in Canada.
Dr. Kitty was recently announced as the recipient of the May Cohen Equity, Diversity, and Gender Award in recognition of her “outstanding effort or achievement in improving the gender-equity environment and diversity in academic medicine in Canada.”
As a Cree woman and the director of the MD Indigenous Program at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Kitty is diligent in the recruitment, admission and support of Indigenous students in becoming physicians. An assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine, she teaches and develops Indigenous health curricula including academic activities in Indigenous health and several specialty programs.
Dr. Kitty contributes to Indigenous-relevant initiatives, research and publications through active collaboration with stakeholders, and sees the care, teaching, and advocacy of her work as a valuable avenue in addressing and improving Indigenous health and social issues, particularly reconciliation.
The AFMC will celebrate the achievements of Dr. Kitty and its other 2018 award-winning academic leaders during the AFMC Presidential Address and Awards Ceremony at the Canadian Conference in Medical Education (CCME) on April 29, 2018, 5 p.m. at the Halifax Convention Centre in Nova Scotia.
