Dr. Peter Tugwell, O.C. has won CIHR’s 2020 Barer-Flood Prize in Health Services and Policy Research. A full professor in the Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Medicine and in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health, and a senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and practicing rheumatologist at the Ottawa Hospital, he is co-director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Knowledge Translation and Health Technology Assessment in Health Equity at Bruyère Research Institute.
The Barer-Flood Prize is named in honour of the leadership, vision and innovative contributions of the first two Scientific Directors of CIHR-IHSPR, Morris Barer and Colleen Flood. The Prize recognizes a senior researcher in the field of health services and policy research who has made a significant impact on policy research, policy and/or care delivery in Canada. It includes a $25,000 prize.
Dr. Tugwell is one of the world’s most highly-cited researchers of the past decade, having authored more than 600 journal articles, monographs and book chapters in his career. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Health Equity, around which he has built a research program involving a multi-disciplinary team whose aim is to study the magnitude and distribution of health inequalities and inequities in the world, using simulation models and developing interventions to improve the health of the disadvantaged. Recognizing the challenges newly-arriving immigrants and refugees cope with, Dr. Tugwell co-led the development of the Canadian Immigrant Health Guidelines that enable doctors across Canada to apply timely screening processes.
The treatment of arthritis, the second-most common cause of disability worldwide, has been drastically improved by Dr. Tugwell’s leadership in developing a database of clinical trials and outcomes and creating a new study design that has become common in regulatory agency trials including at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). He has played a leadership role in the Cochrane Collaboration, which is dedicated to strengthening evidence-based medicine by developing and conducting systematic research reviews.
