As a young professor back in 1993, Dr. Barbara Vanderhyden saw that graduate students needed an outlet for practicing their teaching skills. So, she decided to put them in front of groups of high school students, with whom they could share their passion for science. Soon after, the Let’s Talk Science Program was born. A quarter-century later, it has evolved into a national program and a multi-university and college collaboration.
To mark 25 years of science outreach, staff, faculty and students of the Faculty of Medicine are invited to the Let’s Talk Science “Edible Science” Open House in the RGN Atrium on Tuesday, January 23.
Guests will have a chance to experience first-hand this volunteer-run program, which had its beginnings at the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine and has exposed more than 200,000 Canadian youth (and adults) to the many wonders of science. They will rotate through four stations as scientists, concocting tasty desserts (think marshmallows and chocolate) based on the principles of science and demonstrated by the program’s enthusiastic volunteers.
