The Faculty of Medicine made major advances in the latest subject rankings from the QS World University Rankings, the latest evidence of its growing strength and visibility on the global academic stage.
The University of Ottawa leapt at least 40 spots in the ‘Medicine’ sub-category, ranking 111 in the QS global ranking by subject for 2022. Last year, it was placed in the 151-200 range. In the broader category of ‘Life Sciences & Medicine,’ uOttawa is steadily improving its rank, going from 170 in 2020, to 165 in 2021, to 152 this year.
In a major feat, uOttawa also received a top 51-100 global ranking in ‘Anatomy and Physiology,’ placing those disciplines in the top 100 for institutions of higher learning around the world.

The upward trajectory for uOttawa’s medical programs by the London-based higher education analysts Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) matches the highly favorable trends by various other ranking bodies.
Recent results from the high-profile US News rankings place uOttawa 19th in the world and 2nd in Canada in Public, Environmental and Occupational Health, and the Faculty consistently ranks among the top three in Canada for research intensity in medicine/science (Maclean’s), 77th in the world and 6th in Canada for clinical, pre-clinical and health, and 3rd in Canada for citations (Times Higher Education rankings).
Released April 6, the 2022 subject rankings by QS evaluated 1,300 higher education institutions across the globe, covering a total of 51 disciplines grouped into subject areas. In addition to use by prospective students, the rankings can provide insights into the strength of research citations and how external peers and partners perceive global faculties.
