Dr. Roger Zemek knows that a concussion can happen anytime or anywhere. While many children quickly recover, some children continue to have ongoing symptoms for months.
In order to provide early care to minimize concussion’s impact on a child’s life, Dr. Zemek and his team completed the largest study of pediatric concussion in the world to predict how long it takes children to recover following their injury.
Dr. Zemek’s collaborative exploration of all existing research in concussion led to the comprehensive pediatric concussion guidelines, the first in the world. These guidelines provide a “one-stop-shop” for parents, health care providers, and coaches and schools to manage children’s health post-concussion including neurology, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychiatry and other fields.
Dr. Zemek’s research falls under the umbrella of the University of Ottawa Brain and Mind Research Institute (uOBMRI), Ottawa’s largest collection of basic researchers and clinician scientists focused on brain and mind related health.
