Are you interested in making an impact in international health without the need to travel? The Department of  Family Medicine Training Program in Guyana is looking for medical  educators from all disciplines to deliver or supervise hour-long remote  teaching sessions on a variety of topics to family medicine residents in Guyana.

Guyana is a small Caribbean country located in continental South America, where health indicators are relatively poor. The University of Guyana medical school graduates 20-30 doctors per year, however, within two years more than 80% of graduates leave Guyana to pursue further training elsewhere. Those that remain have a predilection for hospital-based specialties, and there is an absence of physicians with specific training in primary care, as well as an absence of role models to attract graduates to this essential vocation.

With the  vast expertise that exists at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, this community can have a major impact on the Family Medicine Training Program in Guyana, and ultimately promote the health of the Guyanese people.

This program is a partnership between the University of Ottawa Department of Family Medicine, the University of Guyana and the Georgetown Public Hospital, and seeks to establish a sustainable, community-focused postgraduate Family Medicine training program in Guyana.

Do you have an area of expertise you can share with our Guyanese colleagues? All you need is an hour to spare on a Thursday afternoon and an internet connection.

For anyone interested in participating, please contact Asiya Rolston at [email protected] or at 613-562-5800 ext 6899.
