This event encourages young people to explore exciting career options in the health sciences, with over 200 students from secondary schools in Ottawa and surrounding area expected to attend.

The following story was originally posted in November 2019, and was updated on February 10, 2020.

Please note that the event below has been postponed until May 2020. Details will be announced when they are available.

Discovery Day in Health Sciences is being hosted by the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, in partnership with the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, on February 20, 2020.

Offered at 14 sites across Canada, this event encourages young people to explore exciting career options in the health sciences.

Based on the success of last year’s event, we are offering on the same day separate programs for both English and French schools and we expect over 200 students from secondary schools in Ottawa and surrounding area to attend.

The objective of the day is to spark students’ interest in considering a future career in the health sciences.

Workshop presenters coordinate and lead up to two interactive 90-minute sessions (a.m. and/or p.m.) to stimulate learning and interest in their field for students in grades 10 to 12 who are curious about medicine and science. The session should include a brief description of the academic path to presenter’s current position and an interactive activity or simulation in the respective health field.

Presenters in our one-hour, moderated “Health Pros Tell All” career panel have the opportunity to share the story of the evolution of their career and answer students’ questions. These events have been very well received by participants and are an important part of how they explore their options in the health sciences. The CMHF will track and share all student feedback with presenters.

Outreach opportunities to our community stakeholders are important for our medicine and health sciences faculties and your willingness to participate is greatly appreciated.
