With the passing of Dr. Andrew Hill, the medical community has lost a superb vascular surgeon and an accomplished researcher, author and educator.
An associate professor with the Department of Surgery, Dr. Hill was a senior member of the surgical staff at The Ottawa Hospital, attending at the hospital since 1998. Dr. Hill served as division head of vascular surgery at TOH and the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine for many years, and throughout his career, impacted countless people, including his family, his patients and their families, and his colleagues and learners alike.
“His legacy includes training a generation of surgeons in the innovative and challenging new technologies related to vascular surgery,” said Dr. Sudhir Nagpal, head of the Department of Surgery’s Division of Vascular Surgery and long-time colleague of Dr. Hill.
A clinician investigator, Dr. Hill showed himself to be an accomplished educator and academician, helping advance knowledge in the cardiovascular field. His visionary leadership in vascular surgery propelled him to lead the Canadian Society of Vascular Surgeons in 2005, and indeed was largely responsible for the recruitment of the current generation of vascular surgeons at the Hospital, as well as the positioning of Ottawa as an international leader in endovascular surgery.
“His clinical experience, surgical skills and unique sense of humour will be missed by all of us,” Dr. Nagpal remarked.
Dr. Hill began his postsecondary education at the University of Ottawa, completing a Bachelor of Science in molecular biology. He received his medical training at McGill University (Medicine, 1986, MSc Experimental Surgery, 1992), followed by a master’s degree in health research methodology from McMaster University. He received many certifications, honours, awards and acknowledgements throughout his career.
“As a talented and caring surgeon, Andrew dedicated himself to improving the lives of all his patients,” said The Ottawa Hospital in their announcement of the Dr. Andrew Beverly Hill Memorial Fund.
