The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada has granted the Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital Simulation Centre full accreditation for a five-year cycle starting June 1, 2017. The Sixth People’s Hospital is an affiliated teaching hospital with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
This is the first-ever Chinese simulation program to be accredited by the Royal College and the second international program to be accredited following the simulation program at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
“This is an incredible accomplishment for the team at the Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital,” said Dr. Vicki LeBlanc, Director of the uOttawa Skills and Simulation Centre and Chair of the Department of Innovation in Medical Education. “Especially given that the standards for accreditation of an international program are the same as domestic ones, including fulfilling the challenging areas of research and inter-professional education.”
Beginning in 2009, the Royal College established a formal accreditation system for simulation programs with the goal of building capacity in simulation-based medical education.
These accredited programs are internationally recognized as leaders in simulation-based learning and providers of activities that are delivered according to the latest educational research to ensure patient safety and quality care provided by health professionals.
