The summer of 2018 will be one of innovation for the successful students in this year’s Summer Research Work Program at the Faculty of Medicine.
Some of the cutting-edge work slated for the summer:
Photoactive Composite Nanoengineered Materials for In situ Tissue Repair
Selya Amrani | Supervisor Dr. Emilio I. Alarcon
Investigating geographic clustering and external triggers for skin, liver, gallbladder, pancreas and thyroid cancers in Canada
Elysia Grose | Supervisor Dr. Steven Glassman

Lobbying by Food and Beverage Companies in Canada: Is Big Food Undermining Public Health in Canada?
Darrell Vandenbrink | Supervisor Dr. Monique Potvin Kent

David Ripsman | Supervisor Dr. Dean Fergusson
The competition is open to first- and second-year MD students wishing to grow their experience in research. The Faculty offers $5,000 bursaries to students who are selected to participate. The program is competitive, receiving 70 to 80 applications each year with only 50 projects receiving funding. Starting in early June, students spend the summer working closely with a supervisor in their chosen field of research (basic science or clinical), followed by a poster presentation of their work in September.
Students with the best poster presentations go on to present once more at the Canadian National Medical Student Research Symposium in Winnipeg.
Good luck to all of our 2018 participants and their supervisors!
