In the fall of 1945, uOttawa’s medical school was born from the aftermath of the Second World War.
Empty army barracks became classrooms. War veterans and refugees formed the first faculty.
During the inaugural speeches, a government VIP expressed the hope that someday, our fledgling school would “attain the same degree of distinction as McGill, Queen’s and some of the other larger, well known seats of learning.”
Today, we’ve fulfilled that hope. We stand proudly as one of the top medical faculties in Canada, and one of the best faculties of medicine in the world for research impact in biomedical and health sciences.

Don’t miss the kickoff luncheon reception on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at Roger Guindon Hall, with Dean of Medicine Dr. Bernard Jasmin and Dr. Susan Lamb, Jason A. Hannah Chair in History of Medicine in the Department of Innovation in Medical Education. Dr. Lamb will reveal the fascinating and improbable story of the men and women who created the medical school on little more than “a nickel and a prayer.”
