Each year, the Faculty of Medicine hosts a Gairdner Lecture Series as part of a tour that brings together Canada Gairdner Laureates and world class scientists as they lecture at universities across Canada. The Canada Gairdner Awards are recognized as among the most prestigious awards in biomedical science.
This year’s event features two internationally acclaimed researchers: The Faculty of Medicine’s own Dr. Antoine Hakim, 2017 Canada Gairdner Wightman Award, and Dr. Cesar Victora, 2017 John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award. Please join us for both lectures, followed by the opportunity to meet our distinguished guests at the reception.
Dr. Hakim, Emeritus Professor, Neurology, University of Ottawa will speak on the topic of Dementia and Stroke: Renewed Emphasis on Prevention. The extensive career of the world-renowned neuroscientist has not only helped transform stroke from a devastating condition to one that is treatable; it also earned him a major international scientific prize earlier this year, the prestigious 2017 Canada Gairdner Wightman Award, which recognizes outstanding leadership in medicine and medical science.
Dr. Cesar Victora, Emeritus Professor, Federal University of Pelotas in Pelotas, Brazil, is the recipient of the 2017 John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award, for his outstanding contributions to maternal and child health and nutrition in low and middle-income countries, with particular focus on the impact of exclusive breastfeeding on infant mortality and on the long-term impact of early-life nutrition. Recognized for his contribution to health in the developing world, Dr. Victora will address the crowd with his talk, Think Locally, Act Globally—How Research Carried Out in Pelotas Contributed to Global Policies.
