The most recent issue of the University of Ottawa Journal of Medicine (UOJM), “Genetics,” was published at the end of 2018. It highlights how the field of genetics has transformed the way science approaches the treatment of autosomal disorders, psychiatric illnesses and infectious diseases.
“This issue celebrates the advances in our understanding of basic and clinical genetics,” according to MD students Linda Fei and Phillip Staibano, UOJM co-editors-in-chief for 2018–2019. “Our editorial and executive teams have done a wonderful job showcasing the intricate world of genetics and we hope that readers are inspired by their work.”
Run by students at the Faculty of Medicine, the UOJM is a peer-reviewed publication that accepts submissions in both English and French, making it the only bilingual university medical journal in Canada.
“In addition to accepting articles in both official languages, this journal is open to uOttawa students from all faculties and educational levels,” said Teslin Sandstrom, UOJM co-editor-in-chief for 2017–2018 and PhD student at the Faculty of Medicine. “Writing for UOJM is an opportunity to explore topics that they are passionate about, while practising and receiving feedback on their academic writing skills.”
“It is fantastic to see students from a variety of educational backgrounds collaborate and create a publication that will be accessible to students and faculty members for years to come,” she added.
Currently, the journal is supported and mentored by a faculty advisory board consisting of Drs. Melissa Forgie (vice-dean of undergraduate medical education), Phil Wells (professor and chair of the Department of Medicine) and David Moher (senior scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute).
