Results are in from the Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME) program’s most recent accreditation, which took place between April 15 and 18, 2018, and executive leadership is happy to announce that they are overwhelmingly positive.
Every eight years, Canadian undergraduate medical programs leading to an MD degree are accredited through a partnership between the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and the U.S.-based Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). It is an important process that ensures all Canadian medical schools are meeting the highest possible standards—and one in which this faculty participates with pride and enthusiasm.
In their final report to the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine, CACMS/LCME rated 84 of 93 elements as “satisfactory,” which is the highest rating. Of the remaining nine elements, the accreditors rated six as “satisfactory with monitoring,” and three as “unsatisfactory” (in contrast to our last accreditation in 2010 where four elements were deemed “unsatisfactory”). Work has already begun to resolve elements not deemed “satisfactory” and the Faculty will provide its first status report to CACMS/LCME in summer 2019. A second status report will be submitted by the Faculty in summer 2020.
During accreditation, UGME’s resources, learning environment, curriculum, faculty members, and student services were assessed in various ways. The process included a medical school self-study, an independent student analysis, and a site visit by a team of external reviewers. This in-depth analysis is essential for maintaining the quality of the medical school and fostering a climate of continuous improvement for our program, ultimately benefiting our students and teachers.
This process required an enormous amount of time, effort and commitment from the entire Faculty. The executive leadership team would like to extend a huge thank you to faculty members, students and staff for your unrelenting dedication to the success of the UGME program.
