Dr. Elka Miller has been recognized by the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) for her outstanding service as a reviewer of scientific manuscripts submitted for publication in Radiology, the society’s monthly journal devoted to clinical radiology and allied sciences.
In presenting the 2016 Editor’s Recognition Award with Distinction to Dr. Miller, Radiology editor Dr. Herbert Y. Kressel expressed his deep appreciation for her efforts.
“Reviewing is a time-consuming and scholarly endeavour that helps us maintain the high quality of the publications appearing in Radiology,” Dr. Kressel said. “Her prompt, detailed and scholarly reviews have been a great asset to me over the years.”
Dr. Miller, associate professor in the Department of Radiology at the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine and the Chief/Medical Director and Research Director in the Department of Medical Imaging at The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, has been carrying out research in the field of radiology for 16 years.
“As a trained pediatric neuroradiologist with academic and research background in pediatric neuroradiology and neuro-fetal MRI, my experience and expertise are unique and quite specific,” she says. Reviewing about 10 articles a year, she has published 50-plus peer-reviewed papers of her own.
She stresses the importance of peer review of manuscripts prior to publication.
“An important aspect of the scientific process is the exhaustive examination of manuscripts by other scientists,” she says. “It is essential that articles be read critically and suggestions be made for improvement before they are published.”
This marks the fourth time Dr. Miller has received the award for this voluntary service.
“It is nice to be recognized for this time-consuming but vital aspect of advancing scientific knowledge,” she says.
