Note from division head
The Division of Newborn Care is a large and diverse division of neonatologists and pediatricians providing newborn care across the spectrum from well to the most critically ill newborns. The Division is comprised of 15 neonatologists and 17 pediatricians. The neonatologists are hospital based and provide inpatient care in the NICU and SCN as well as working in the Neonatal Follow-Up Clinic. The pediatricians are largely community based but they provide service to well newborns during their initial hospitalization.
Division mission statement
- To deliver regionally integrated state of the art care for newborns and their families.
- To strive for academic excellence in support of clinical service and our teaching roles within the University of Ottawa.
- To develop and apply an organizational model that will allow achievement of our clinical and academic goals.
- To create reciprocally supportive and respectful working relationships to nurture our professional goals.
We are continually working to improve the quality of care provided to our patients and families. We offer and integrate new technologies and services as they become available, develop and update practice guidelines and review outcomes to improve our care.
Beyond our strength in clinical care, we make significant contributions to education and research in neonatology and newborn care. Our teaching includes undergraduates, postgraduates and a large component of outreach. Our clinical teachers are frequently recognized with awards of excellence. Division members are active in research including investigation of stem cells as potential therapy for neonatal lung disease, effective parent counselling, necrotizing enterocolitis, artificial intelligence to support decision tools, neonatal pain, ventilation and many other research areas.
