Our goal is to advance excellence in the field of the pathology by offering a range of focused programs and learning opportunities for the education of medical students, residents, graduate students, and clinical fellows in programs related to pathology.
I am honored to hold the position of Chair, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital (TOH) and Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). Our team of Pathologists, Microbiologists, and Biochemists, along with technologists and clerical staff, are making a significant difference to patient care in the Eastern Ontario region. This message offers an insight into the opportunities offered by the Department through its major mission components of medical education, clinical services, and translational research.
The Department administers two postgraduate residency training programs affiliated with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada- Anatomical Pathology and Microbiology. I am delighted to announce that we will be offering a PGY-6 residency training in Forensic Pathology approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada starting July 1st, 2022. This will make the University of Ottawa and affiliated hospitals the third subspeciality training centre for forensic pathology in Canada.
Our Department contributes significantly to the undergraduate curriculum in medical education both in the form of lectures, laboratory training, tutorials, and electives. The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is actively involved in undergraduate medical education at the University of Ottawa, with 39 faculty members contributing over 370 hours each year towards pre-clerkship and clerkship teaching. Many academic staff, by virtue of cross appointments to basic science departments, also maintain membership in the School of Graduate Studies and Research and are involved in the supervision of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
The Department is also proud of the Louise Pelletier Histology Core facility, which works with over 90 researchers from uOttawa, other universities, and government institutions, as well as the Faculty of Medicine's academic partners, such as The Ottawa Hospital's Research Institute and Cancer Centre, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the Ottawa Heart Institute.
