Applications to our residency program must be made through the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS).

Application Process and Selection

Initial Filtering

We prefer recent medical graduates and most importantly who have an interest in Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology program and have recent and relevant clinical experience in the field within the last 7 years. We would like all IMGs to have taken and passed the MCEE exam with a passing score in spoken English required by the University of Ottawa and The National Clinical Exam (NAC OSCE) in order to apply for 1st  year residency position.

File Review

After the initial selection process, the files are sent to the program director (PD) and the residency coordinator for their review.  The candidates are scored on a 1-5 scale (5 being excellent) individually by the PD and the residency coordinator. The things that are primarily looked for in this selection process are candidates’ interest in the field, recent exposure and experience, scholarly activities and letters of references.

Interview Process

The interviews will start with a welcome meeting with the Program Director. The candidates will then meet individually with the Program Director, members of (RPC) and the Chief Resident on a Multiple Mini-‐Interview set up.  The interview process assesses the candidates CanMEDS roles (Medical knowledge, Professionalism, Collaboration, Communication, Manager and Advocacy roles as physicians) and the candidates’ interest in the Ottawa program. The candidates are scored on a 1-5 scale (5 being excellent) on each of these CanMEDS roles by each members. Each interview will last about 20 minutes with each member of the team.

Observership Program

UPDATE: The Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology Program is not currently offering the  observership opportunities. For the candidates who are applying fo CaRMS, this will not affect your application to the Program.
