Academic Accommodations

The University of Ottawa is committed to creating an inclusive environment that promotes the academic success and well-being of each learner.

The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences works with the Academic Accommodations Service to support students enrolled in the undergraduate Doctor of Pharmacy program with temporary or permanent disability and this, in compliance with all academic and professionalism requirements.

Main steps for requesting academic accommodation

  • The student identifies and recognizes their particular needs regarding their health, disabilities or other specific circumstances that may require accommodations.
  • Students are responsible for being aware of their program requirements and for understanding the possibilities and limits of accommodation measures in class and during evaluations.
  • The student contacts the PharmD program administration by email at [email protected] for information on the procedure to follow to obtain accommodations.
  • The student submits a formal request to a specialist in the Academic Accommodations Service, who evaluates the student’s needs and recommends adaptive measures. This request must be accompanied by the required documentation. It is advisable to schedule an appointment at least six weeks prior to the start of classes.
  • The deadline for new students wishing to request accommodations is the Friday of the second week of classes. Former students must submit their request at least two weeks prior to the start of the term so that the PharmD program administration can take their needs into account. All exceptions must be approved by the Success Committee.
  • Accommodations are valid for one academic year, except in the case of temporary approval while awaiting renewal of adaptive measures. Each year, adjustments are renewed through the accommodations office (Academic Accommodations Service), which requires updated supporting documents.
  • Medical information is protected under University of Ottawa Policy 90 - Access to Information and Protection of Privacy and Policy 14a - Student Record. We all have the obligation to protect students’ confidential information.
  • The student forwards the letter from Academic Accommodations Service to the administration at [email protected], highlighting the authorized accommodations.
  • The administration reviews the accommodation request and sends a reply to the student by email. This step may involve collaboration between various stakeholders, such as management, professors, the Academic Accommodations Service and the Success Committee.
  • Once accommodations are approved by the administration, the student sends a copy of the letter from the Academic Accommodations Service to the professors concerned so that the necessary adjustments can be made. This may include adaptations to teaching methods, an individual exam room, or other adjustments specific to the student’s needs.
  • Accommodations will not be retroactive. The request (and its approval) must be in effect at the time of the evaluation, e.g., an exam. If a student fails an exam, the lack of adaptive measures shall not be used as valid justification to contest the mark obtained on the exam.
