2024 SHARE Recipients

Hosted by the Office of Social Accountability, the Social Impact Program, SHARE stream offers Faculty of Medicine learners the chance to enhance the social impact of their research activities. Students were invited to submit proposals focused on building or strengthening partnerships with communities or other stakeholders and mobilizing knowledge to benefit those most affected by the research, providing them an opportunity to gain skills in the research grant process. An adjudication committee of faculty, learners, and community members evaluated the projects. This summer, we awarded nine Faculty of Medicine students who demonstrated a strong commitment to this "bench to society" research approach. Recipients came from diverse programs, including UGME, CMM, PGME, Biochemistry, Epidemiology, and Microbiology and Immunology, reflecting a wide range of disciplines committed to driving social impact through collaborative research. Congratulations to all the recipients and thank you to everyone who applied!

The final projects will be showcased at the end of the SHARE cycle in Fall 2025 and are anticipated to deliver meaningful community impact.

2024 MSSRP – Social Accountability Priority Area Recipients

The Social Impact Funding Program – Medical Summer Student Research Program (MSSRP) stream is a continued collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine’s Research Office, offering two ways of student engagement in research for the program’s social accountability priority area: faculty-initiated and community-led. This year, we matched 7 students to projects. All participating students were invited to attend knowledge and progress sharing sessions throughout the summer to enhance overall student experience.

Social Accountability shoutouts

Protecting the Earth for the health of humankind

The planet’s health is inextricably bound to that of humans—and safeguarding our collective health requires urgent and transformative action.

With the health care industry estimated to cause between one and five percent of total global environmental impacts, the Faculty of Medicine is stepping up as a leader in planetary stewardship to protect the health of populations—setting a precedent for medical schools in Canada.

MD students lead initiative to give low-income and minority youth a chance at careers in medicine

“Currently, there are barriers to health care and medicine with under representation from racial minority groups, low-income backgrounds, people with disabilities, and the LGBTQ2S+ community.” — Farhan Mahmood (MD 2023), co-lead of the Social Accountability Student Advisory Committee in UGME.

A committee of uOttawa MD students is working with community outreach organizations, such as Let's Talk Science, to make medicine and health care more accessible as career paths for youth from low-income and minority groups.

CIHR grant announcement

Community engagement has come to be seen as an important aspect of the delivery of health services, but there is no clear understanding of precisely how such engagement makes a positive difference. Now, thanks to a $1 million grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, a Canadian research team will spend the next four years measuring the impact.

Dr. Claire Kendall, associate dean of social accountability in the Faculty of Medicine and senior investigator at the Bruyère Research Institute, is leading a cross-faculty, interdisciplinary team of uOttawa investigators in partnership with investigators from Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) and, uniquely, representatives of two municipalities, Ottawa and Thunder Bay, as principal researchers.
