Objectives | During your elective at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI), you will have the opportunity to observe many cardiac surgery cases. This brief introduction to cardiac anesthesia is meant to provide students with a basic understanding of what goes on in the “pump room”, so they feel more comfortable the first few times they participate in cardiac cases. You will also notice that, at UOHI like everywhere else, there are significant variations between anesthesiologists, but hopefully this will give you a general idea. Cardiac anesthesia can be a bit intimidating at first, but it is also a lot of fun, once you get a grasp of the basics. |

Electives at Hôpital Montfort
Students at the University of Ottawa have the possibility of doing clinical electives in a Francophone setting at Hôpital Montfort. All elective requests at Hôpital Montfort must be sent to the appropriate coordinator by following the guidelines listed on Montfort's website.
Non-Clinical Electives
Below is a list of the non-clinical electives offered to University of Ottawa students.
Pre-clerkship
Objectives | To reinforce curricular anatomy knowledge by providing students with hands-on opportunities to engage in cadaveric dissection. |
---|---|
Offered to | 1st or 2nd year medical students |
Number of students per academic year | Based on student interest and lab capacity/donor availability (typically up to 60 students for the Fall electives and up to 30 students for the winter electives). |
Available dates |
|
Duration | For elective credit, students must dedicate at least 3 afternoons (contributing 10 hours of laboratory dissection) in their chosen elective, as tracked by the Anatomy Interest Group and verified by the Faculty. |
Location | RGN Anatomy Laboratory |
Contact | Anatomy Interest Group (AIG) Email: [email protected] |
Notes | Registered medical students will be assigned into groups (4-6 students/cadaver) and will be supported by peer teachers (second year medical students) and by laboratory staff and faculty. Each elective consists of cadaveric dissection across 3 afternoon sessions, with students dissecting the regions related to the content being delivered in the curricular laboratories. Credit for completion of these electives is attendance-based. Students must notify the Anatomy Interest Group of their absence at least 1 day in advance. However, students do have the opportunity to make up for a missed lab by attending a ‘make-up’ laboratory session near the end of the semester. Finally, each elective typically features a formative ‘practice tag’ exam related to the content covered during the elective. |
