Dr. Piercy studies the microscopic morphology of the surfaces of crystalline solids, using low-energy electron diffraction methods. Non-equilibrium surface roughness is characterized statistically on the nanometer scale, to detect the growth and relaxation of a distribution of surface and near-surface defects created by low-energy ion bombardment.
