Electrical safety certification services

The Electronic Shop provides Canadian Electrical Certification (Hydro/CSA) pre-inspection services as the exclusive authorized provider on campus.

Did you know?

Before an electrical product or piece of electrical equipment is used, sold, displayed or advertised for sale in Canada, it must be approved by an accredited certification or evaluation agency. The item must carry the official mark or label of the agency which indicate that the product has been independently assessed for safety.

Uncertified electrical equipment? We can help.

The Electronic Shop is the exclusive authorized provider on campus for Canadian Electrical Certification (Hydro/CSA) pre-inspection services.

Our inspection process

Our experienced team conducts thorough pre-inspections to determine if modifications are necessary for certification compliance. We follow a transparent approach:

  1. We assess all equipment (equipment must be opened for complete inspection)
  2. If modifications are needed, we consult with you before proceeding
  3. We complete necessary modifications with your approval
  4. We schedule an official inspection with a licensed electrical safety inspector

Note: Any warranty implications from opening equipment or making modifications are the client's responsibility to address with suppliers or manufacturers.

Our experience

With over 3,000 pieces of equipment assessed since 1988, our team has built an excellent relationship with electrical safety inspectors, ensuring smooth certification processes.

Cost-effective solution

Licensed inspectors charge hourly rates and do not perform modifications. Our service reduces overall costs by:

  • Conducting thorough pre-inspections
  • Completing necessary modifications before official inspection
  • Grouping multiple equipment pieces for inspection
  • Minimizing inspector time requirements

Consultation services

For larger purchases of non-approved equipment, we offer risk assessment consultations:

  • Evaluation of certification challenges
  • Coordination with purchasers, suppliers, and manufacturers
  • Assessment of potential modifications and associated costs

Service fees

Hydro Inspection Standard Rates:

  • $300 for Faculty of Science clients
  • $400 for other University Community clients

Additional consultation and modification services are billed at standard Electronic Shop rates.

Ringing in around $400, the cost of a single inspection does not come cheap.

Scheduling

To maximize cost efficiency, inspections are scheduled once multiple equipment pieces are ready, typically monthly. Timeline varies based on equipment volume.
