There are three options in the program, all of which lead to the same diploma.

Important information for students enrolled in the Honours B.Soc.Sc. in Criminology

The difference between these three options is the sequence of courses that must be completed, and the experience gained in each stream.

All students admitted in the Honours are automatically registered (de facto) in the course stream option and remain in this option unless they apply and are admitted into another option.

Course stream option

All students admitted in the Honours are automatically registered into this option. No further action is required for those who want to stay within the course stream option.

Research stream option

This option is for students who are considering a career in research, in policy analysis, in program evaluation, or who are considering pursuing graduate studies. The main appeal of this option is that it allows students to register to small class size research seminars (less than 20) that offer more autonomy, engagement and interaction amongst students. In these research seminars, students will be exposed to an original learning experience, since they will be able to work on projects allowing them to apply their theoretical background to concrete issues. Among the many projects in which students will be able to participate, here are a few examples:

  • Selecting a current event, such as the project to build a new prison, to then elaborate a report which sets out the main issues and proposes strategies to combat this initiative.
  • Conducting an advocacy-based research that involved attending human rights sites in Ottawa.
  • Creating a poster that presents the results of a film analysis inspired by cultural criminology.
  • Analyzing clinical vignettes to identify ways of resolving ethical issues related to intervention with criminalized or vulnerable people.

Students who want to register in this option must apply for a change of program to switch from the course stream option to the research stream option.

Students must have a minimum CGPA of 7.0 to be admitted to the research stream option.  The number of places being limited, candidates are selected according to their CGPA ranking.

Deadline for submitting applications: 1st semester of the 3rd year of study.

It is also possible to submit a retroactive request to have this option recognized upon graduation if all course requirements have been completed.

In cases where the student admitted to the research option is not able to complete the course requirements, they will simply graduate by default in the course option.

Field placement option

This option was designed for students who want to attain practical experience in the field. The Ordre professionnel des criminologues du Québec (OPCQ) recognizes this option for obtaining a licence to practice in the Province of Québec (please note there is no professional order for criminologists in any other Canadian province).

Students who want to register to this option must apply for a change of program to switch from the course stream option to the field placement option.

Students must have a minimum CGPA of 6.0 to be admitted to the field placement option.  The number of places being limited, candidates are selected according to their CGPA ranking.

Deadline for submitting applications: 1st semester of the 3rd year of study.

Please consult the field placement section of this site for additional information.

All students being registered to the Honours in Criminology will receive a notification or an email explaining the steps that they must follow to change option.

If you need more information about this process, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Studies at [email protected].

Specific stream for obtaining a licence to practice from OPCQ

For students who are planning to work in the province of Québec, a licence from the Ordre professionnel des criminologues du Québec (OPCQ) is now required to work with vulnerable people.

The University and the OPCQ have an agreement regarding the courses that students must complete to obtain a licence to practice in the Province of Québec.

To obtain this permit, students are required to complete a field placement in intervention (field placement option) and a specific list of courses.
