A brief story of Brazilian Popular Music
Jun 26, 2023 — All day
Carmen Fullin and Meg Stalcup are delighted to invite you to this public conference for AABrO (Academe & Arts of Brazil at the University of Ottawa), a new association for Brazilian Studies at the University of Ottawa.
"Abro" means "I open" in Portuguese, and our playful name is an invitation to join us in the opening of a series of scholarly and artistic events in the upcoming month and next academic year.
Conference and Pocket Show by Evandro Gracelli
Evandro Gracelli is a guitarist, and graduate in Popular Music at Campinas University (Unicamp) - Campinas, Brazil. A guest guitarist, arranger, producer, and composer on over 30 albums by various artists in Brazil, Gracelli has also been teaching guitar for over 30 years. In Ottawa, he maintains musical ties with musicians such as Rachel Beausoleil - his partner in the group Sol da Capital - and with the group Florquestra Brazil. In São Paulo, Gracelli performs with his quartet, which plays his own Brazilian jazz compositions.
In his talk, Evandro Gracelli will present a brief history of MPB (Brazilian popular music) by performing songs that represent some of the most remarkable movements and facts of the evolution of Brazilian music, including choro, samba, folk songs, bossa nova, festival music, the sound of Minas Gerais and baião. These genres and styles will be highlighted to show how MPB maintains the sonic strength that characterizes it.
The event will be held in-person in English, with Q&A in French and Portuguese, at the Faculty of Social Sciences and on Zoom:
