Joao Gabriel is a PhD candidate in history at Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on imprisonment in a French colonial context, particularly in Guadeloupe in the nineteenth century. After several years of anti-racist activism in France, his political interests are now focused on Guadeloupean nationalism and Pan-Africanism.
