Our scholarship program is one of the most generous in the country. It rewards your academic and your experiential achievements for every term of full-time study. You may also qualify for a bursary which is awarded based on financial need.

Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents

International Students

The Faculty of Social Sciences holds a competition for the allocation of different types of awards and financial support for international students. A committee considers applications submitted by the program to which the student has been admitted. Funding is not guaranteed to all students who meet the eligibility criteria.  Scholarships are awarded until the funds are all allocated.

International field research grant

The Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) offers research grants for students registered in a graduate program in the FSS who wish to pursue field research abroad through data collection within a research project*.

Students are eligible for one award of up to $1,500 over the course of their graduate studies. The grant will be based on available funds. The application deadlines are March 15th and October 15th. The Scholarship Committee will base their evaluation on the four following criteria:

  • Satisfactory academic progress in your program of study
  • Research excellence
  • Academic excellence
  • Relevance of your project

Students interested in applying, must present the following documents:

  • Request form (PDF, 102 KB)
  • CV
  • Proof of Ethics approval, if applicable (if the ethics approval is not available at the time of the grant submission, the grant could be conditionally offered upon receiving the ethics approval before your departure);
  • Waiver form (PDF, 29 KB);
  • Detailed budget;
  • Proof of medical insurance including unlimited repatriation clause;

All documents must be submitted to the FSS Graduate Studies Office at FSS 3021 or by email at [email protected].

The reimbursement will be allocated upon the student’s return to Ottawa with supporting documents (i.e. boarding passes, receipts for accommodation, etc.)

*Requests from students registered in the Major Research Paper option will be treated on an exceptional basis.

Travel grants

If you are planning on presenting a publication directly related to your thesis at a conference, you may be eligible for a travel grant. Eligible students include Master’s with thesis option students; doctoral students and students enrolled in a “fast-track” program. Consult the relevant section below for more details on eligibility criteria.

  • Master's with thesis: Up to $550
  • Ph.D. and fast-track: Up to $800

Research travel grants

The Faculty of Social Sciences recognizes that travel by Master's and PhD students in the pursuit of research for their theses is important. For this purpose, the Faculty of Social Sciences will henceforth offer them grants for travel outside the city when circumstances require it.

If you are going on a Research Stay, you may be eligible for a travel grant. Eligible students include Master’s with thesis option students; doctoral students and students enrolled in a “fast-track” program. Consult the form for more detailed eligibility criteria.
