Our 2021–2022 alumni
This year, several of our alumni were honoured:
Trailblazers series and Young Alumni Award
In addition to being featured in the Trailblazers series during Black History Month, Nathan Hall (BSocSc ’07) received the Young Alumni Award from the uOttawa Alumni Association. The desire to take concrete action against racial discrimination led Hall (BSocSci ’07), an entrepreneur and leader, to found a social enterprise in 2020 that seeks to remedy inequalities in the workplace. His award-winning platform, Culture Check, works with Blacks, Indigenous peoples and people of colour who have experienced racism, as well as with allies and executives who wish to begin a cultural shift in their organizations. The empathetic, respectful workshops, consultations and resources he offers directly affect the lives of thousands of people each year.
As well, during the alumni gala, Michel Prévost (BSocSc ’78, MA ’85) received the Award for Commitment to the University.
uOttaKnow podcast
In November 2021, host Gwen Madiba (BSocSc ’08, MA ’12) interviewed Canadian director Philippe Falardeau (BSocSc ’89), known for works such as Monsieur Lazhar (nominated for an Oscar), as well as Hollywood films such as The Good Lie (with Reese Witherspoon) and, more recently, My Salinger Year (with Sigourney Weaver and Margaret Qualley). In the episode, part of the podcast’s third season, Philippe discussed the work of a filmmaker and changing film industry.
Homecoming
Homecoming 2021 for uOttawa alumni was an opportunity to hold an event as part of the prestigious Alex Trebek Lecture Series. Guest speaker Esther Duflo, 2019 Nobel Prize for Economics laureate, attracted many alumni to her talk, while Dean Vicky Barham hosted a discussion afterwards.
Alumni Association
In spring 2022, Josephine Palumbo (BSocSc ’88, JD ’91) became president of the University of Ottawa Alumni Association. Josephine completed a Bachelor of Social Sciences with an option in political science and graduated with distinction from the uOttawa Faculty of Law. She is currently deputy commissioner of competition for the Cartels and Deceptive Marketing Practices Branch of the Competition Bureau (Canada). Currently on a temporary assignment with the federal government assisting Ukraine, she begins her term with enthusiasm and determination.
Marleau Lecture Series
The Marleau Lecture Series on Economic and Monetary Policy was established in 2019, thanks to the generous donation of Hubert Marleau (BSocSc ’67), chair, founder and a director of Palos Management. With over 45 years of experience in investment and finances, Marleau is a leading figure in Canada’s financial community. In 2021–2022, the lecture series enabled the Department of Economics to host a symposium on economic policy featuring a signature academic lecture by a renowned scholar in the field. The fund also helps pay for three research seminars a year.
