Research-related events at the Faculty of Social Sciences are a great tool to promote the work of our researchers. They also serve as an opportunity to share and discuss with interested stakeholders. Here are a few of the many events that took place over the last year.

January 24, 2023 - Cervical Cancer - Addressing Inequities for Cervical Cancer Elimination

This virtual conference organized by the V-Trac laboratory and led by Dr. Gina Ogilvie looked at ways to raise awareness of cervical cancer in black communities and eliminate the barriers and discrimination they face. 

January 26, 2023 - Digital Dilemmas: Technology, Governance, and Canadian Municipalities 

This presentation focused on the challenges municipalities face with modern technologies and digital platforms, and how problems can be mitigated and overcome through cooperative regional and national action.

March 6, 2023 - Moving beyond the Prison Pandemic

This online webinar featured speakers with lived experience of imprisonment, human rights advocates and researchers. Together they assessed how the pandemic has exacerbated the harms of incarceration and the challenges associated with diversion and de-incarceration. 

March 8, 2023 - Counter-flows: solidarity-based research on water justice

In this talk, Meera Karunananthan presented the path of collaborative research on water justice. 

March 13, 2023 - Walls to Bridges/ComPaS: teaching in prisons as a collective project for social change

In this presentation, Sandra Lehalle and Alexis H Truong discussed some of the strategies and practices they use to promote inclusion and equity in education. 

March 15, 2023 - Between Cohesion and Silos

Conference presented by the Centre on Governance around the governance and risk management of the National Shipbuilding Strategy.

March 16, 2023 - COVID-19 vaccination in black communities: what we know, where we are, where we're going?

This educational seminar provided an overview of the state of vaccination in black communities, and discussed barriers to vaccination against COVID-19 and other diseases. It also explored initiatives in place to reduce vaccine reluctance in black communities. 

March 24, 2023 - Crisis at a crossroads: what can Afghanistan's neighbors do to help stabilize and consolidate peace in Afghanistan? 

The Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS), the Asian Studies Network (ASN), and the York Centre for Asian Research, York University hosted a webinar with renowned experts to analyze and discuss the interests and policies of Afghanistan's neighbors. 

March 29, 2023 - Unpacking public intervention in the convoy 

The Centre on Governance hosted a day-long discussion on the findings and recommendations of the Rouleau Commission report with University of Ottawa experts in the fields of law, politics, public administration, economics, criminology, sociology, communications, technology and health. 

March 30, 2023 - The annual conference on global ideas - Against decolonization: Africa's place in the global circuit of ideas

The Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS) has organized this event in collaboration with the Research Chair in Global Political Thought as part of CEPI's 15th anniversary. 

April 25, 2023 - Should nuclear power be developed to combat climate change? A public debate

The University of Ottawa's Centre for International Policy Studies organized a public debate to answer some of the most important questions of our time: how will Canada respond to the climate crisis? The debate was moderated by Patricia Fuller, Senior Researcher at the University of Ottawa and former Ambassador for Climate Change, Gordon Edwards, President of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility, and Chris Keefer, President of Canadians for Nuclear Energy. 

April 27, 2023 - Digitization of public administration in federal countries

To better understand the relationship between digitization and broader institutional elements, such as the multi-level dynamics of federal systems, the University of Ottawa's Centre for Studies in Governance and the Forum of Federations, with the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), conducted research that explores the notions of digitization and federalism. The authors' workshop presented a milestone for the production of a book and the advancement of a new program of comparative research that links the two fields - digitization and federalism - which, until now, have remained largely isolated from each other. 

May 23, 2023 - Multipolarity and pragmatic peacekeeping

The Center for International Policy Studies (CIPS) has organized a special issue of the Journal of Intervention and State Building. The editors of this special issue participated in a hybrid session to discuss their articles. 

May 25, 2023 - Public participation and trust in risk decision-making: where does Canada stand?

The Institute for Science, Society and Public Policy (ISSP) has launched a new edited book, "Democratizing Risk Governance: Bridging Science, Expertise, Deliberation and Public Values".
