Directed studies

The topic is selected and developed in consultation with the supervising professor in accordance with departmental guidelines. The work submitted for this course must be different from that submitted for other courses, including the thesis proposal, the master’s major research paper or thesis. Maximum of one directed studies course per student is allowed and permission is granted only under exceptional circumstances.

Prerequisite: Approval from the PhD program supervisor.

If you wish to pursue a directed studies course, you must:

• Establish a general subject area that you wish to study with your supervisor.
• If you intend to pursue the project with another professor seek their approval/permission.
• Set up an appointment with the professor and bring a Directed Readings Form (available at the secretariat FSS8005). You must jointly establish a list of readings and the evaluation criteria. Please note that setting up a directed studies course usually involves more than one meeting with the professor.
• Bring a signed copy of the form and the syllabus to the secretariat (FS8005).
• The Academic Assistant will leave the form for the program director’s approval and will e-mail you once the request has been approved and you have been registered to the course.

All Directed Studies requests must be made at least 2 weeks prior to the registration deadline set out by the Registrar.
