Inspired by the desire to deepen bilateral relations between Canada and Germany, and the will to seek solutions to societal issues, the University of Ottawa and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) have partnered to promote social science research.
Named after the “Father of modern Germany”, the chair will examine some of the key challenges faced by representative democracies, including
- the effects of migration on political attitude,
- the populist tide that has swept the world,
- transformations in the conduct of elections and the determinants of vote choice, and
- unequal representation of various cohorts of the population including women, minorities and youth.
The launch of this chair is part of the University of Ottawa’s work on understanding the complexity of Governance, Policy and Open Societies, which is one of the Faculty of Social Sciences’ five focus research areas.
