The portal is now open for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Grants competition.

Once again, the Faculty of Social Sciences will be coordinating a voluntary proposal review initiative. We are encouraging colleagues to submit their proposals by August 23 for pre-review. Here are some tips and resources to assist you in preparing your submission.

Deadlines

  • As soon as possible - Confirm your intention to apply with [email protected]
  • August 22 - SSHRC Information session 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • August 23 - Deadline to hand in your draft if you wish to receive detailed feedback.
  • August 30 before 4 p.m. - Internal registration by writing to [email protected]
  • September 26 before noon - Internal deadline for submitting your application and RE form. Signatures for the RE form are not guaranteed after this date.
  • October 1st before 8:00 p.m. - SSHRC deadline for submission.

  • Write your proposal in clear, plain language (non-technical terms) and avoid jargon.
  • Use the sub-titles provided in your Detailed Description section.
  • Respect the number of pages and presentation guidelines.

Budgets are included in the evaluation process. Be reasonable and substantiate every expense.

Evaluation

Detailed description of criteria - Marks are awarded for each bullet:

  • Challenge—the aim and importance of the endeavour (40%)
  • Feasibility—the plan to achieve excellence (20%)
  • Capability—the expertise to succeed (40%).

Co-applicants and collaborators - Definitions

Co-applicants must register online and submit a SSHRC CV. CVs are not required for collaborators.

RE Form – Request for funds from an external source

The RE form is mandatory for all requests for funds. Submit the RE online, then print, sign and email to [email protected]

Submitting Your Application

Email your RE form completed and signed by yourself to [email protected]   (no need to have your Director sign)

  • We will obtain the Vice-Dean’s signature and send the form to Research Management Services
  • The RE Form is mandatory.

Verify and electronically submit your online application from your SSHRC portfolio. 

(Once your application has been submitted, it cannot be modified.)
