Unveiling a groundbreaking Master's program in Psychedelics: Pioneering the future of mental health and wellness

General information and program requirements - Master of Arts Psychedelics and Consciousness Studies

Introduction

We are thrilled to announce the launch of an innovative Master's program in Psychedelics, a first-of-its-kind academic initiative designed to explore the profound potentials of psychedelic substances in mental health and human flourishing. This groundbreaking interdisciplinary program aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and ethical frameworks necessary to advance the burgeoning field of psychedelic studies and therapies.

Why psychedelics?

In recent years, psychedelics such as psilocybin, MDMA, and LSD have emerged from the shadows of cultural stigma, revealing their potential as powerful tools for treating a range of mental health conditions including depression, PTSD, and anxiety. Leading scientific research has highlighted their ability to promote neuroplasticity, enhance emotional resilience, and foster profound personal insights. Psychedelics also have spiritual implications for their role in wellbeing and end-of-life distress. Our Master's program is designed to harness these insights, training the next generation of researchers, therapists, and policy advocates to contribute meaningfully to this evolving field.

Program overview

The Master's in Psychedelics program is unique in integrating interdisciplinary perspectives within the Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy framework. According to Dr. Anne Vallely, Co-director and Professor in the Department of Classics and Religious Studies, "While such transpersonal experiences can lead to life changing insights, they can also trigger existential challenges that go beyond what traditional clinical training can address. Our program addresses this by integrating psychological and spiritual training: students learn about the human quest for transcendence and the mythic structures of consciousness alongside the psychology of mental health, neuroscience, and the dynamics of therapeutic encounters."

Program highlights

  • Interdisciplinary Education: Students will explore the medical, therapeutic, spiritual and ritual uses of psychedelics to gain insights from diverse cultural perspectives.
  • Advanced Research: Emphasis on innovative research in consciousness studies, comparative mysticism, and mental health.
  • Culturally Sensitive Therapies: Students will learn about culturally sensitive psychedelic-assisted therapies.
  • Professional Training: Practical training for licensed medical providers to become skilled facilitators and integration counselors for psychedelic treatment sessions.
  • Spiritual Care Training: Spiritual caregivers - including clergy and chaplains - will receive training to support individuals undergoing psychedelic treatments for mental health, bereavement, and end-of-life.
  • Traditional Healing Practices: Based on Indigenous traditions of psychedelic plant use for wellness and spirituality, there is interdisciplinary training on psychedelics in shamanic or ritualistic settings.
