Community matters: non-commercial initiatives for and by researchers

This panel of uOttawa experts will discuss research that promotes community control of knowledge sharing. Additionally, we will explore the rich community infrastructure that already exists, and the need to better fund and support these systems, so that the research that is relevant to local, regional, and national concerns is broadly disseminated and accessed.

Join us on October 24th for this candid conversation. We hope to see you there (in-person or online!).

Speakers:

  • Dr. Stefanie Haustein: Associate professor at the School of Information Studies at the University of Ottawa and co-director of the Scholarly Communications Lab (ScholCommLab), an interdisciplinary group of researchers based in Ottawa and Vancouver who analyze scholarship in the digital era. She is also an affiliated researcher of the Institute for Science, Society and Policy, the Centre for Journalology and the Life Research Institute at uOttawa and the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie at Université du Québec à Montréal. Dr. Haustein’s research focuses on scholarly communication, research evaluation and open science, including open access, research data sharing and reuse.

She has a Ph.D. and M.A. in Education Sciences, with a didactic method option in French, as well as a Bachelor's degree in orthopedagogy from l'Université de Montréal. She conducts studies on the appropriation of the writing, on orthographic development and on the socio-cognitive and cultural components involved in written socialization among minority populations, all from an intercultural perspective. She is also interested in the different models of reception services for newcomers. Following the 2022 publication of the Right to Read issued by the Ontario Human Rights Commission, the Centre Jules-Léger Consortium selected Professor Fleuret to co-lead the development and piloting of a reading intervention program for students in Francophone school boards in Ontario. In 2022-2023, the results of his research were reported by more than 100 media outlets in over 20 countries. Dr. Boisgontier is a staunch advocate for open access and open science, and winner of the 2022 Open Scholarship Award at the University of Ottawa. He is the founder, representative, and Manager of PCI (Peer Community in) Health & Movement Sciences, an initiative that peer-reviews and recommends preprints in these disciplines.
  • Dr. Kelly Cobey: Scientist at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute where she leads the Metaresearch and Open Science Program. She is also an adjunct professor in the School of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Ottawa. Kelly is interested in research pertaining to the implementation of open science, the reporting quality of research, data management and sharing best practices, research reproducibility, and patient engagement in research. She presently sits on the Advisory Board of DORA (Declaration On Research Assessment), which aims to drive the use of more responsible metrics to evaluate research and researchers.
