At the event, Talia Chung, Head University Librarian and Dean of Libraries, welcomed everyone to the new Library space and acknowledged the unceded Algonquin territory that the new Lees building is located. Chung expressed her joy at the idea of having a new space for the community: “Beyond this physical space, Library users can always benefit from the expertise of our Librarians and library support staff, via in-person or online appointments. Our goal is to foster a welcoming environment which inspires creativity, growth and collaboration.”
Lucie Thibault, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, also spoke to guests and expressed her pride of the new home for the faculty: “Today, thanks to our state-of-the-art facility, we are providing our students, researchers and professors with the resources to turn our ambitions into reality. And this library is one of them.”
The new library offers a variety of spaces that can accommodate the diverse needs and preferences of its users, from quiet study areas for research and reflection, to collaborative spaces. Guests enjoyed refreshments in the new contemporary space in the beautiful natural light.
In addition, the Library has purchased its first Lend-It Machine, which is located in the new space. This technology allows users to pick up books, from the Library’s vast collection directly from there, and it also allows faculty members to reserve materials available for their students without having to go to another library location. Guests were able to check out the new technology and get a demonstration.
Lindsey Sikora, Head, Research Support (Health Sciences, Medicine, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics - HMSTEM) was the last to address the guests. She acknowledged the Library staff who are working in the new Library, including the research librarians from the HMSTEM team and the technicians from Learning and User Services.
