LibQUAL+ 2023
In line with the aspirations of Transformation 2030 and our own Strategic Plan 2025, the University of Ottawa Library runs the LibQual+® survey on a two-year cycle to gather feedback from a representative sample of our diverse user population. This exercise enables us to deliver responsive services that complement evolving learning, teaching and research needs.
LibQual+ is a survey developed by the Association of Research Libraries to understand users’ opinions of and satisfaction with library service quality, collections, and spaces.
The LibQual+ 2023 survey ran from February 7 to February 24, 2023, and we are proud to share the following highlights:
- Overall satisfaction was very high among all user groups (undergrads, grad students and faculty members).
- Overall satisfaction improved for all user groups, compared with results from 2021.
- With 1,432 completed surveys and a nearly 10% response rate, user engagement was very high, demonstrating the strong attachment of our university community to library services, collections, and spaces.
- All user groups gave very high average scores to the services provided by staff and librarians. This indicates that the Library team is having a positive impact on the user experience.
We wish to thank everyone who provided their precious feedback!

Opportunities for improvement
While we are delighted with results pertaining to the general satisfaction of uOttawa Library users, the LibQual+ survey is also a powerful tool that can help with strategic planning and operations, namely by pinpointing issues for our community.
LibQUAL+ 2023 survey results identified opportunities for action with regards to the process for remotely accessing electronic resources; the user-friendliness of our catalogue; easy navigation on our website, and the conviviality of our spaces.
These finding direct us to areas where the Library’s efforts will have meaningful impact and help the Library make informed decisions about resource allocation, prioritization of service improvements, and communication needs.
Data collection and sampling
25% of undergraduate students and 35% of graduate students were randomly selected to participate. 100% of uOttawa faculty members were also invited to fill out the survey. Participants were contacted by email.
